Employment

The Kansas Turnpike Authority is a great place to work and has much to offer employees. Current Positions Available

Job Title: Communications Operator I - Full Time - One Opening

Department: Dispatch Office

Location: Wichita Headquarters

Duties:
Operate the communications equipment of the Kansas Turnpike Authority.  Handle all incoming telephone traffic for the Kansas Turnpike Authority offices and radio base communications for the Kansas Highway Patrol police radios, radio base communications for the Turnpike maintenance crews, tollbooths, and service areas on eight hour shifts, or longer as needed.  Enter essential information for KTA databases.

Examples of Work Performed:
Operate computer keyboard to access information and also enter information for KTA/KHP information systems and CAD system.  Operate radio data recorder.  Operate Turnpike HAR system, entering in current weather and/or road reports.  Operate radio transmitters on patrol and maintenance frequencies.  Operate telephone console for incoming calls.  Monitor KTA alarm systems.  Decipher messages returned from NCIC, NLET, ALERT, DMV and other entities, and disseminate to appropriate personnel.  Log and decipher toll maintenance breakdown and relay to technicians.  Receive and record weather reports and advise tollbooths and other personnel.  Monitor cameras from toll plazas.  Communicate with customers as needed at remote locations.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  1. General knowledge of Kansas Turnpike rules, regulations, and policies.
  2. Knowledge of police radio communications regulations and rules.
  3. Understand and operate complicated radio communications and electrical communications equipment.
  4. Must be able to speak clearly, listen accurately and write legibly.
  5. Must be proficient on dispatch computer systems.
  6. Must be able to touch type.
  7. Must have voice and hearing acceptable for radio monitoring and transmitting.

Job Demands:  The following are minimum demands necessary for this job:

  1. Ability to safely lift up to 20 pounds from floor level to chest level and maneuver such weight effectively out two feet from the body.
  2. Ability to maneuver in close spaces which would require twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, stepping and like movements.
  3. Ability to read and decipher information.
  4. Ability to communicate orally in a courteous and businesslike manner, and especially during stressful situations.
  5. Ability to differentiate colors.
  6. Ability to write and understand written instruction and to respond in the same manner.
  7. Hearing within range, which will allow normal radio and telephone conversation, hearing test required.
  8. Successfully pass polygraph test if never tested, and pass background investigation including fingerprint tests.

Education Requirements and Experience Required:

  1. High school degree or equivalent.
  2. 18 years of age or above.
  3. No previous criminal record.
  4. Prior law enforcement dispatch experience required before hired.
  5. NCIC training and certification required, or be able to recertify if expired.
  6. Working knowledge of computer operation and databases.

 

Job Title: Toll Collector - Part-Time

Department: Toll Collection

Location: Wellington Area

TOLL COLLECTORS - PART TIME
$12.44 / HOUR STARTING WAGE

The Kansas Turnpike Authority has a limited number of openings for Part Time Toll Collectors in the Wellington area. New collectors earn an excellent starting wage of $12.44.


These are "PART TIME" positions, with no minimum guarantee of hours to be scheduled.  There are no health insurance, vacation, or PTO benefits associated with these part time positions.  These are not suitable positions for potential applicants who need a permanent schedule 40 hours per week, or need benefits. 

The number of hours that employees are schedule to work will be highly dependant on their availability and willingness to work a wide variety of days and shifts, including evenings, late nights, weekends and holidays. 

Some assigned shifts may be less than eight (8) hours in length, but any collector's shift will always be at least four (4) hours long.

Ideal candidates will have experience in providing quick and professional customer service, and they should possess good math and cash handling skills. Applicants should have some personal or employment experience with basic computer keyboard functions. You must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid drivers license, and have a high school diploma or GED to be considered for employment.
